“LET THE REVOLUTION BEGIN”

SPELLED COMMUNICATION

Spelled communication is an approach that allows people who do not speak or whose speech is minimal or unreliable to express themselves by selecting or spelling words using letters, keyboards, letterboards, or assistive devices.

Our providers are trained in recognized methods of spelled communication to provide individualized communication supports.

Indigo is proud to have pioneered the integration of spelled communication into adult program supports in Virginia Beach. The underpinning philosophy of “presuming competence” is an essential component of not only spelled communication but all of the programs we offer at Indigo Center for Autism.

FAQs

What to expect?

1

Expect to be surprised! No, your loved one doesn’t have to “know letters” in order to try spelled communication. Expect to be involved! We teach you along with your child every step of the way so you can practice at home. You can also expect to be a little perplexed when you learn that speech is a motor skill.

who may benefit?

2

People with complex communication needs (e.g., autism, CP, apraxia, neurodiversity). SC may benefit learners who need a way to produce more nuanced, flexible language than picture-based AAC alone allows - and may help families who “have tried everything” to help their loved one communicate.
